Completely off topic to this post, but did you know a corpse flower is about to bloom in Denver? It’s true. I’ll let you know if it smells as bad as they say it does…
Moving on, but please, check out that doughnut made in honor of bloom. Just…inappropriate, right? The plant’s scientific name is Amorphophallus titanium. Well earned, clearly.
I know some of you are one book at a time kind of readers. I am not. I typically have five or six going at any one time. I have a fair amount of required reading for my job, so that always accounts for a book or two, but I genuinely do have around four books going at once. I’m a mood reader. Based on my reading the week, my mood seems to have been all over the place – which is true. So maybe there really is a connection?
I started Kate Morton’s upcoming novel The Lake House, which seems to be a very Kate Morton-esque novel (I’m killing it in the book description department, I know). I’ve also started Crooked by Austin Grossman, which is an ARC I got last month. I decided to read it based on this snippet from NPR’s review: “Grossman out-nuts the nut-jobs with a premise that’s as outlandish as it is superbly conceived. . . . Crooked isn’t simply a work of simple satire or wonky alt-history; it’s a speculative character study that taps into truths about Nixon that may be more essential than literal. That is, when they’re not deliciously absurd.” And I’ve been rounding that out with Stephen King’s Revival, which I did not review when it was released, but I would like to now (if I ever plan to get anywhere in my SK project).

We had a corpse flower in Melbourne earlier this year – http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/rare-third-corpse-flower-rises-at-melbournes-royal-botanic-gardens-20150314-1440pc.html It even had its own Twitter account 🙂 I took my kids to see it – the flower was considerate enough to ‘peak’ on a weekend (that said, had it been a weekday, I would have taken them out of school… and relished writing a note to the teachers as to why). It wasn’t a nice fragrance but not nearly as bad as I had anticipated.
I’ve just started Judy Blume’s latest. The woman knows how to write a page-turner (I’m supposed to be doing a major bit of assessment for uni this week…)

The Denver one has its own Skype account and has been text messaging the corpse flower that’s about to bloom in Chicago. It was anticipated to open yesterday (while I was working), but it didn’t. Hopefully by Tuesday (last work day before my weekend)… I will drive back though just to smell it.

I can’t even write what that donut looks like, but those people are grounded for ruining a perfectly good chocolate donut with so much icing.
I’ve been curious about Crooked, so will be curious to hear what you think about that. I’ve been in a bit of a slump mentally with my reading. The Big Bad Book of Bill Murray helps, but I’m parsing that out a little at a time. I just started Alex Marwood’s The Killer Next Door on audio, my tree book is Eeny Meeny (which I hope holds up to the positive feedback I heard), and my ebook is an ARC of Too Fast To Live, To Young To Die, a book about James Dean’s final hours. Nothing is floating my boat sufficiently yet, but all are in the early stages.

Crooked seems like it will be a lot of fun, I’m only about 20% in, but I’m hopeful. The Big Bad Book of Bill Murray sounds like just about the greatest thing ever.

I’m definitely not a one book at a time kind of reader. I’m all over the place when it comes to reading, and usually switch back and forth between 3-5 books.

I think reading multiple books fits better with the way my mind works. Unless a book is an absolutely amazing page turner, I’m probably switching between several.

Lucky you to get an ARC of “The Lake House”! I loved Kate Morton’s “The Secret Keeper,” which I read way back at the beginning of 2013, and I vowed to read all of her books — and I haven’t read a single other one! But I’m definitely planning to read “The Lake House”! I saw your Instagram photo of the donut — hahahaha!

I keep wanting to read one of Kate Morton’s books, but I have no idea where to start and every time one comes out it sounds a little better than the last.

I still haven’t read any Kate Morton, despite having had The Secret Keeper on my shelf for a few years. I need to remedy this.
I think we had a corpse flower bloom in Buffalo a year or two ago, but I didn’t get to go see it. That donut!
