Ten Things I Hate About You

Or ten things you’ll love about me? Whichever.

Sky Pond RMNP

As bookish as the site tends to be, sometimes it’s more fun to find out more about the person behind the blog…? Is that true? It’s true for me. I love reading about others, but I’m generally somewhat hesitant to share about myself. Weird how that works.

Let’s see. What won’t bore you to tears… I mean, did you know I’m like Stephen King?! I think you did.

  1. For those who follow along, I just announced that I’m having a baby! It’s certainly not the most interesting thing about me, but it’s probably the most…obvious, at the moment.
  2. I love, love, love the movie Ten Things I Hate About You. Julia Stiles is my hair idol. Also, for better or worse, really enjoyed some of that soundtrack.
  3. I am currently completing my continued education for the year (for my job) in Virginia. It’s a one week intensive course about scientific illustrations through 1800. It is actually the longest period I’ve been away from my kids (please ignore the sniffles).
  4. I love National Parks. This year I’ll check three off my list: Crater Lake National Park, Big Bend National Park, and Rocky Mountain National Park.
  5. I love the outdoors, especially hiking and swimming. I would love it even more if I could somehow make my wonderful queen size mattress fit in my four person tent.
  6. There’s a lot to be both angry and sad about in the world, and most of the time I don’t know what to say. One of the topics that irritates me the most is that no one ever asks my husband why he doesn’t (or if he’s planning on) staying home with the kids. That is the number two question I’m asked, right after do I know what I’m having. “So will you stay home with the kids now?” is one of the fastest ways to get on my nerves. It seems almost trivial with the state of things in the world, but…it’s not to me.
  7. I feel like the only person not obsessed with Hamilton. It’s on my list to get to, really! I find it odd how not keeping up with pop culture can make you feel a little isolated.
  8. The new Gilmore Girls, however, will be made a priority. SO EXCITED.
  9. I’m terrified of flying on tiny planes. I took a 23 minute flight from Washington, D.C. to Charlottesville, VA recently and thought I was going to die for every single one of those minutes.
  10. At this point, I am (a bit) legitimately worried that you’re bored. I don’t watch TV, I don’t read YA, I’m not obsessed with Hamilton, I exercise and eat right, I’m pregnant (which means I desperately miss gin), and I really do love clogs. Who loves clogs?! But seriously, exciting times around here. Fun Fact: A coworker recently told me only old people wear clogs. Whatever.

I hope this post didn’t leave you…whelmed.

Happy Tuesday! Tell me something about yourself! If you’d like. If I was a good blogger, I’d give you a prompt.

(I’m a bad blogger.)

  1. Welcome to Virginia! 10 Things I Hate About You is a film I strongly associate with my college years as it came out about the time that I started college and my friends and I watched and rewatched it several times. The “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” scene was one of my favorite scenes. I also haven’t delved into Hamilton at all. I’m not someone who is generally in tune (heh) with what’s going on in Broadway anyway, and so I haven’t got around to this.

  2. I was totally out of the loop on “Hamilton” until recently, when I finally broke down and listened to some of the soundtrack, and I can actually see what all the fuss is about. I’m not big on musicals but I saw and loved “The Book of Mormon” (even my husband liked it!) and I’ll plan to see “Hamilton” whenever it eventually goes on tour.

I am also obsessed with national parks; one of my life goals is to visit all of them! I’ve been to RMNP (obviously, I’m from Colorado) and Big Bend (gorgeous — and HOT; we went in July), and I went to Crater Lake when I was a kid but since I don’t really remember it I don’t count it on my list. I think I’ve been to 7 as a grown-up, so I have a ways to go!

You’re a librarian, right? What exactly is your job that you get to take a course on old scientific illustrations?! That sounds amazing! I’ve thought about getting my MLIS but I have no idea what I’d want my focus to be.

P.S. That picture is gorgeous… I just want to be there.

    1. I am a librarian. I am a science librarian at a museum and one of my focuses is the rare book collection, so I come across old scientific illustrations more often than not in my daily work life. I don’t regret my MLIS, but it’s not a career path I recommend to others. The job field is SUPER competitive and the pay is low. That being said, it’s typically – especially outside public libraries (which are awesome) – very interesting from an intellectual standpoint. And it goes without saying that you get the best coworkers.

  3. I enjoy hearing about what my favorite bloggers are up to. I’m soooo out of the loop and usually get to what all the cool kids are doing months and years after their popularity. So I haven’t jumped on the Hamilton train either. I will, someday. That personality flaw is why I’m now just watching Gilmore Girls, Parks & Rec…to name a few.

    1. Me too! It makes me feel old and out of the loop in a way, then I try to remind myself I am in a different life place and such, etc. etc. I do plan to devote some real time to giving Hamilton a chance, someday.

Gilmore Girls is the best! I haven’t tried Parks & Rec yet, but I want to at some point.

  4. Charlottesville is my hometown! And I’m with you on those tiny planes – I live in the UK so flying transatlantic is one of my favourite things to do now, but the little hoppers between DC and C’ville are, well, terrifying. Best of luck with your continuing education course 🙂

    1. I liked Charlottesville, it was really cute and had a lot of cute shops and restaurants within walking distance to UVa (where I was staying). I wish I’d had a chance to visit Monticello!

  5. I haven’t jumped on the Hamilton bandwagon yet either. Just never felt that enthusiastic about American history.

  6. LOVE 10 Things I Hate About You! And still listen to the soundtrack regularly. FNT by Semisonic was an essential fixture of my youth. Haha.
I’ll tell you, as someone who does stay home with the kids, it is also super annoying when people hear that and say, “Oh well OF COURSE you do, it’s really the best thing you could do for your kids.” It always leaves me feeling like, “Hey wait a minute, for a long time I DID still work after my first was born, and I think I was still doing a pretty bang-up job as a mom. This is not the only legit path for me!!” Really I think we should all just stop commenting on people’s parenting choices and what is “best” because it is so rarely well-received (or helpful, for that matter). 🙂

    1. For me, I think the main irritation (and there are several) if that I get asked and my husband doesn’t. I accept that people will ask me stupid questions, because it’s in their nosy nature, but at least ask nosy questions equally!

Also, since I know you also have two boys, do you think you’re going to try for a girl? 😉

(Sorry I couldn’t resist! I can’t tell you how many people have asked if I’m hoping for pink this time around – and it’s not well received.)

      1. HA! I get that question ALL the time! Depending on who’s asking, I either tell them no, because I’d rather try for a redhead (I lost that genetic lottery both times), or I tell them we sure as heck aren’t trying for another, or else my husband’s urologist has a lawsuit on his hands. (Also true, though that one’s only for when I’m feeling a tad snarky or going for shock value.) 🙂

  7. Are we the same person? I think so.
    -J.S. hair idol – check.
-10 Things soundtrack – check, OBSESSED back in the day.
-Constant questions re: SAH mom – YES, WHY DO PEOPLE DO THIS. I hate that once you’re a mom (seems to only happen to moms), it’s like you no longer have any other identify. And then once you stare blankly and say, no no, I’ll be going back to work, and baby will go to daycare… You might as well admit that you’ve killed someone and have them stashed in your trunk. Okay, wow, rant over. Glad I’m not alone in this.
-I too, don’t “get” Hamilton. Although I haven’t really had time to give it any attention, so maybe I’ll like it if I got to know it…? So little time. (Add Pokemon Go, Snapchat, Cheez Its, and Donald Trump to the list of things I don’t “get”)
-And YES – GIVE ME ALL THE GIN.

    1. Yep, no one has EVER asked my husband when he would start staying home with the kids. That’s my job, apparently. Someone actually said the other day that he makes more than enough for us to survive without me working. First, um…no, not really (things are so expensive right now!). Second, how is that anyone’s business but ours?! I get so mad (and, likely, a tad hormonal).

Odds are I’ll have had this baby by election day, so if Trump is the new president (I do not get him either), I will be drinking all the gin.

  8. Fun list! Congrats on the new baby. I didn’t for a second think about staying home with my son. I couldn’t have done it. I like adults so much more than kids. 🙂 I hear what you’re saying though – I hate how ingrained gender roles still are in our society. Also, I haven’t heard Hamilton yet either.

    1. Staying at home would not fulfill me, and I would not excel at it, so it’s not something I will likely ever do unless I have to, yet I still love my children very much. So it works, right? 🙂

  9. Being whelmed is good. Overwhelmed is bad and underwhelmed is not a word. I don’t keep up with most pop culture either, except via twitter, so I only see the snark 🙂 Julia Stiles table dancing to Hypnotize was so me in high school. Specifically, the part where she falls off the table.

  10. Oh and my annoyance is now that my kids will both be in school come September, people keep saying “oh now life will be a lot easier!” uhhh… no, I work, so it’ll be the exact same. They’ll still go to out of school care in the morning… even people who know that i work say this to me, I don’t get it??

  11. For the record, I’m not a Hamiltonian, either, and I love my clogs! Great minds… Oh, and you should definitely hike the Smoky Mountains and Mount LeCont!

  12. I was an early Hamilton adopter because I am both a musicals and a history nerd — but there’s no rush! Whenever you get to it, it’ll still be there and it’ll still be awesome! 😀

More than one person at my high school told me that I was just like Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate about You. I did have very long fair hair, but nevertheless I can’t help suspecting that what they actually meant was that I was quite bitchy. (Which I guess is fair enough.)

  13. 2. I don’t have a specific hair idol but in my next life, I would like the kind of thick, straight hair that can pull-off a long, blunt fringe.
    7. Hasn’t reached Aus yet, so you’re not the only one not keeping up…
    9. I’m not terrified but I actively avoid. Am terrified of helicopters though (my previous job required time in both).
    10. I’ll keep up the gin consumption on your behalf, okay?

  14. Oh how I love Ten Things I Hate About You! I could watch that movie over and over and over. And over. I do love Hamilton, but I was late to the game and so now kind of feel like a poseur. Whatever. 😉 Funny how that all works out.

Ooooh the questions people ask. And if you have a boy they’ll want to know if you’re going to try for a girl. Because having three kids of the same gender might not be enough? And I’m always SO impressed with how active you and your family are. I love the outdoors and we love camping (though in the comfort of a camper…), but it’s exhausting with little kids! Sometimes I dream of being able to go on a camping trip with just my husband like we did before kids. LOL! I know you won’t judge me for saying that.

    1. The questions! And, while it’s partially hormonal, I get so mad at some of them. Since I have two boys, I do get a lot of “hoping for pink?” and such. What do people think I am going to do, give it back or trade it in if it’s another boy? Nope. I am definitely having a baby to have a baby, not to have one or the other. Quite honestly, being that it’s the third child, if it’s a little girl, she’s going to have to wear a lot of blue hand me downs.

  15. Mazel tov on the baby! 10 Things I Hate About You is the best! Our household is waiting very (im)patiently for Gilmore Girls. Also, we just did a family vacation to Washington and saw an amazing IMAX movie about the National parks, makes me want to visit them all!
