This week’s first question is (from Parajunkee’s View):
Do your reading habits change based on your mood? Do you read a certain genre if you are feeling depressed or happy?
Absolutely. My go-to book(s) when I am depressed is either Stephen King’s Bag of Bones or Jane Eyre. I’ve read those books so many times it is like meeting with old friends when I read them – I imagine it’s the comfort factor I get that makes me return to them when I am depressed.
If I’ve read too many “darker” books in a row, I do try to choose something light and fluffy. For example, I read The Devil All the Time and Gone Girl back to back earlier this year, both excellent, but I was thrilled my my next book to review turned out to be Dream Lake. Please follow via RSS, facebook, twitter, or email.
and the second question is:
When a book goes “viral” (Hunger Games, Fifty Shades, Twilight), do you rush out to read it like everyone else, even if it’s not in your typical genre?
No, actually my tendency is to avoid it, if for nothing else than the plot has usually been spoiled for me somehow. However, I have read all three series listed above, and I would say I usually read it eventually (when the holds list at the library gets under control).
I’m not good at light and fluffy but am finding some I like. Thanks for stopping by. following back via rss

I will avoid also unless it was already on my Wishlist waiting for Publish date then I try to read immediately so the story is not spoiled for me.
I am not a SK fan but have said I will give Bag of Bones a try.

I tend to think of Bag of Bones as a Stephen King book for those who don’t like horror. I primarily consider it a love story, albeit a haunted one 🙂

I’m the same way — I can’t read too many stark/depressing books in a row. I’m a naturally happy person, but even I can’t handle too much darkness at a time. I have to break it up with something light and happy.

I read Twilight and The Hunger Games before all the hype. I love The Hunger Games, but I was definitely put off by all the Twilight fans. I try not to judge books by their hype. Great answers!

I have comfort books too but not those. Mine tend to be lighter.

The fact that one of your comfort novels is by Steven King makes you awesome. Keep up the awesomeness.

Ha! I tend to avoid super-hyped books, too, at least until the furor dies down. I don’t have anything against popular books, but having a million people tell me that I MUST read something RIGHT NOW is a little overwhelming. (Plus I’m the sort of person who wants to do the opposite of what someone tells me to do, lol.)

After a few dark books I also fancy something light.

Go-To books is an interesting topic worth exploring. My two favorite books of all time are Harry Potter and Hunger Games. But my Go-To books (the books I’ve read more often than anything else) are Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith and The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner. You’ve heard of Comfort Food. I guess they’re Comfort Books.
