A Literary Giveaway

It’s time for the (tenth!) Literary Giveaway Blog Hop. This is an event taking place from Saturday February 8th until (and including) Wednesday February 12th. It’s hosted by Leeswammes,

literarybloghop_february

So what do you need to do enter the giveaway? All that you need to do it leave a comment. I would very much appreciate it if you would follow me on Twitter, Facebook, or via whichever blog reader is your preference, but it’s not necessary. A winner will be randomly selected on Thursday, February 13th. The giveaway is open to anyone.

The winner will be able to choose from ONE of the following:

-A book that has been reviewed on this blog
-A $20 gift card to Amazon
-One Penguin Hardcover Classic (see full list here, they’re very pretty)

As I said, all that you need to do to enter is to leave a comment on the blog. To avoid overly generic comments (and to make my comment moderation more fun), you could tell me what is the worst book you’ve ever read.

Thanks for participating!

    1. Haha, you and Laura both. Is it wrong that I’m tempted to read it just for the laughs. I can’t say that I actually will, but tempted all the same.

  1. Thanks for a great giveaway! The worst book I’ve ever read was a self-published modernisation of Emma set in the American South. It was horribly convoluted and sooo full of errors it was almost unbelievable!

  2. Oh my goodness, I LOVE Penguin Hardcover Classics… they’re so beautiful. I only have 7 in my collection so far, but I am always eager to expand. 😉 Worst book I have ever read? The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel. Thanks so much for this giveaway!!!

  3. I’ve read quite a few horrible ones. But the one I’m not too embarrassed to admit is probably Prized by Caragh M. O’Brien. The first novel in the series is called Birthmarked. I was drawn to it because the main protagonist is facially scarred. It was nice to read about someone who wasn’t physically perfect for once, but any bit of good that the first novel contained was absolutely ruined in Prized (book #2), which introduced a LOVE SQUARE.

  4. One of the books I love to hate is Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld. I know a lot of people loved it, but it was totally overrated to me. Most recently, Labor Day by Joyce Maynard. Absolutely ridiculous. Good question.

  5. Oh boy, worst book I ever read (and finished). Eat Pray Love had be RAGING with HATERAGE. Ugh. Can’t say I liked The Memory Keeper’s Daughter, The Rosie Project, or A Walk Across the Sun much either.

I think if I won your giveaway, I’d be interested in In the House upon the Dirt between the Lake and the Woods by Matt Bell that you reviewed last summer. Thanks for the chance!

    1. I felt the exact same way about Eat Pray Love. I’m also one of the people that felt The Rosie Project was fine, but nothing special. And from the way it was hyped I was expecting it to be the best romantic comedy of the last decade. It wasn’t.

  6. This was like 20 years ago, and I can’t remember the name because I think my mind wanted to block it out…but had this American girl marrying a Russian prince and he was in a secret society and a drug user and he abused her….it was horrid.

  7. This is hard because I’m away from home and have with me reading records back to only the beginning of 2013 AND I’ve reached an age where I simply don’t finish books that are bad (or that I think are bad). There were ten such books in 2013. I guess the worst of that bunch (based on the couple of chapters hat read) was The Woman Who Lost China.

Thanks for the chance to win one of those beautiful Penguins!

  8. The worst book I ever read and finished was Magic Mountain. My mom read it when she was pregnant with me and wanted me to read it during my first pregnacy. I fought me way through it, but at the end, I kept yelling at the book: Get off the mountain already!

  9. Maybe I’ll be hated for saying this and probably is not a bad book, but it was definitely not for me (I started it 4 times and never got over page 140) —>Wuthering Heights

  10. wow, that’s a tough one! I hate all the 3 books I had to read by Jane Austen. And the most recent book I DNFed is The Explanation for Everything, by Grostein. thanks for the giveaway

  11. The worst book I ever read? My mom got really into Twilight and started buying knockoffs, one of which was a series about a mortal girl and immortal boy… But he wasn’t a vampire, because that would be silly. He’d just figured out alchemy in the Middle Ages and had the elixir of life at his disposal. I don’t even remember what it was called, but it was awful awful awful.

  12. Books I haven’t finished would be the worst and they aren’t many but maybe surprising to a few: Twilight, Bossypants and A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian was the latest. The last book I did finish but really offended me was Karma Gone Bad.

  13. gah! the worst book? well, two books that everyone else loved but that I DNF’d were Middlesex and Memoirs of a Geisha. I was excited about both of these books but after getting 50 pages or more I just.couldn’t.keep.reading. I’m sure they’re actually good and maybe one day I’ll give them another chance, but I just couldn’t get into them.
One book I read all the way through but seriously hated the character was Frey by Melissa Wright.
    Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

  16. The worst book I ever read is a tough one, but I guess I’ll give the prize to The Last Street Novel by Omar Tyree. Read it because it was an assigned review. Otherwise, I usually don’t finish books I really hate!

  17. I think I’ll have to say…50 Shades of Grey. I didn’t read the whole book, but the parts I did were pretty bad 😀

  18. Anymore if I really think a book is horrible I don’t finish it. I’ve read some romances that I’ve thought were pretty bad, but they were forgettable enough I don’t remember the names. I can name a book I expected to love but was surprised to find I disliked intensely. Wuthering Heights. What a nasty bunch of characters.

  19. The worst book… Hmmm… I just finished “Affinity” by Sarah Waters today, and tought it was quite terrible. The writing did not appeal to me, the topic (spiritualism) just bugged me and it was way too slow.

  20. I hated reading Main Street by Sinclair Lewis. Sooo boring. New Twitter follower (@AJArndt) wouldn’t mind at all if you’d follow back 🙂
I would choose the gift card as I didn’t see To Kill a Mockingbird in the hardcover classics.

  21. The worst book I’ve ever read was a book called The Sword Guest. It was one of my first review request reads, and I really forced myself to finish. I have a pretty strong hatred of Twilight too (but for some reason still want to read the last book!)

  24. The worst book that I have ever read…is one that I got for 99 cents at Amazon and was a ‘quilting’ mystery. I don’t remember the name, I’m sorry. But I couldn’t get past the first two chapters it was just so horrible.
Also, I know I’m probably in the minority, but I couldn’t finish One Hundred Years of Solitude. That is not a ‘worst book’ claim, just wasn’t my thing I guess!

  26. The worst book I’ve read was Ten Rallies. The only reason I got through it was because I had to write a review on it. It wasn’t a good one!
