Bookish (And Not So Bookish) Thoughts

10. I find all the criticism of Daniel Murphy to be ridiculous (baseball player, NY Mets). He took three days off for the birth of his son and missed the first two games of the season. Fans and commentators are upset that he wanted to witness the birth of his son; they feel he shouldn’t be allowed paternity leave. It’s ridiculous and embarrassing that anyone feels that way. And from the perspective of a woman, I would be beyond angry if my partner willingly chose to skip the birth of our child.

09. I’ve never been particularly interested in perfume, but I did develop a mild interest after reading The Perfume Love: A Personal History of Scent by Denyse Beaulieu. I wear one perfume occasionally: Library of Flowers – Honeycomb. The more I thought about it, the more I found the idea of this to be absurdly appropriate. How did I end up choosing this scent? Is it because I’m a horticultural librarian and the name appealed to me? I don’t know…

08. There’s a new meme starting tomorrow: Six Degrees of Separation, hosted by Annabel Smith and Emma Chapman. It’ll start with Burial Rites by Hannah Kent, for full instructions, go here.

07. Which literary couple are you? I got Lady Chatterley and Oliver Mellors. You don’t need to be a part of a couple to take this (according to me, at any rate), but it is pretty funny. Or me being identified with Lady Chatterley is, at the very least.

06. I’m going to BEA in New York (this May). I’m so excited, I haven’t been to New York since my early twenties and I have spent any real time there since I was a teenager. I’ll get to meet Leah and Shannon and several others I’m very excited.

(My beach vacation is also booked for the summer. I practically cannot wait. As is tradition, I’m going to tweet all of my lovely beach pictures to Kate in the middle of her winter. It’s only fair.)

05. I recently discovered Wallander. I love it, it is so perfectly Scandinavian. Can I please move to Sweden? PLEASE.

04. 15 Dating Problems Only Book Lovers Understand. Yes.

03. I have been car shopping for the last week and a half, I last did this ten years ago when I graduated from college, it was far more exciting then. However, I’ve neither maimed anyone nor spontaneously combusted, so it’s been successful.

(This depends on how you measure success, as I haven’t bought anything yet.)

02. I have a friend on a Facebook who is a huge fan of quotes, I usually derisively roll my eyes, but I always knew I liked Henry Rollins (Wrong Turn 2 was lovely): I want a soul mate who can sit me down, shut me up, tell me ten things I don’t already know, and make me laugh. I don’t care what you look like, just turn me on.

Yes, Henry Rollins, that’s what I want. Even is you were creepy on Sons of Anarchy…

01. NPR’s April Fools’ joke is a masterpiece – really, really good. Conversely, America is full of idiots – at least the ones on Facebook…

So is anyone else going to BEA? Any places I must eat in New York? How is your week going?

    1. It’s awful. I hate it. I really, really HATE it. On Friday, I had an appointment to test drive a car and the salesman was thirty minutes late. As I’m packing up my stuff to leave he walks out, ready to go. I was like “no…” and left.

    1. I am not Lady Chatterley. That’s way to far off base…

I’m thinking I’m going to try and go to that one too, I’ve never been to Chicago (not to spend any real time there).

  1. Boo on those radio jerks. I’m a Mets and Daniel Murphy fan (I have a DM Cyclones bobblehead around here somewhere). It’s really gross what they said.

For the literary couples quiz, I got: Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark from “The Hunger Games.” I wish I knew what this said about me and the imaginary other half of my couple.

p.s. Eat at Caracas on 7th Street near 1st Avenue. So good. This is a must. There is also V-Nam Cafe on 1st Avenue (bw 1st & 2nd).

    1. It’s just so disgusting. You only get one chance to witness a birth. The whole thing was asinine. I like how Boomer is scrambling to apologize – too late asshat. Anyway…

I could picture getting Katniss for myself. If only because I tend to be very independent and need a fair amount of space in any relationship. I can’t believe I’m comparing myself to a YA novel. But Lady Chatterley I am not. I love to know how that’s calculated and which questions indicated which couple. It probably was the one I answered about only see my significant other at night (I was thinking “well, I work all day…” probably not what the question was implying).

Keep any suggestions coming. I’ll be there from the 27th-1st and while I’m sure the conference will take up a lot of time, food is more important.

      1. In the same area as the aforementioned is Cafe Himalaya for Tibetan food. 1st Street near 1st Ave. Essentially, food is really good in the East Village.
If you find yourself uptown, Roti Roll on Amsterdam Ave & 109 St is tasty India to-go.

Book Expo is at the Javits Center, which does not have good food (only crummy, overpriced). So I recommend to bring something with you. Unfortunately, that area is very far west and not around much. Sort of a desert for anything. A few blocks away is the Tick Tock Diner…not bad at all and also if you google it, you can read about the murder-for-hire plot involving a manager. If you go up to Hell’s Kitchen, there are some better options, but the theatre distric/midtown can be difficult, expensive, and disappointing.

  2. Ooo, I’m so curious what your links are going to end up being with Burial Rites – such a cool idea!

I’m so, so excited for BEA that I’m practically wishing the next month away. I love that you’re wondering where to eat, because that’s also pretty high on my priority list.

    1. There’s so much stuff to do and so many places to eat. Obviously, New York is a good place to satisfy my pizza cravings. And my craving for pizza makes the TMNT’s craving look tame.

    1. Neither place is particularly close to me, but I’m going for both blogging and work, so it should work out alright.

And I plan to. I take too many pictures of everything.

    1. I know! Two days is not exactly generous in the way of paternity leave. And people were outraged at the poor man (more the commentators than the fans).

  3. I am so with you on the Murphy thing. There are like 162 games per season (I admit, I googled it)! My God, it wasn’t like the World Series or something. Which brings up a whole other issue- do you let your husband skip the birth of your child to play in the World Series? Maybe if it’s game 7? Hmmm….

  4. I got the same literary couple as you, but I’m not really sure what that means, because I’ve never read the book.

The April Fool’s joke was funny, because it is so true! My Dad was just telling me yesterday that he feels like people reply to his e-mails without even reading them, because they ask questions that had already been answered in the e-mail, which they would have known if they had read the whole thing. I don’t understand this.

    1. It’s rather provocative and I’m the least overt mind/soul/physical intimacy type of person I know.

I know people don’t read my work email. People don’t always even read my whole blog posts. I don’t blame them most of the time, I am rather wordy.

  5. Yikes, I got Odysseus and Penelope. Heavy.

I love that 6 Degrees of Separation meme. I might have to give that a shot!

  6. Wallander is epic, every time I watch it I love sweden (and Scandinavia in general) more and more. There is a British version too, which once again proves Kenneth Branagh is a god.

Have fun at BEA! Wish I could go, damn England for being so far away and damn New York for being so pricey.

Those 15 problems hit close to home, in fact it could have just been the first point and it would sum my whole existence up.

    1. I’m watching the Kenneth Branagh one. You’re right, so, so good.

I hope it will be worth it. I can rarely afford to go to either England or New York because they are so expensive. I’m sharing my hotel room with two other girls to make it affordable.

Yep, #1. Although, people here tend to think reading is a perfectly interruptable task. I think my main problem is that I’ve perfected my “leave me alone face” a bit too well.

  7. I’m trying to decide if attending BEA should be a goal for the next five years, or ten years. Hopefully five. You’ll have so much fun!

I got some couple from Lord of the Rings, which, meh. I get the feeling most of those buzzfeed quizzes are designed for young adults. I also answered “at night” because the only time we get to ourselves is after the kids go to bed. Not because of any sexy times. We are too tired for that 🙂

    1. Do it. It should be fun. I hope. I’m spending far too much money (which is anything over $5) for it to suck.

Yeah, the activities occurring in my bed are pretty much limited to actual sleeping. There is no mind-body exploration occurring through the discovery of physical pleasure happening. Someday…
