This week’s top ten post (or five, as it happens) is recent five star reads. I’m going to change that up a bit and choose a five star book from a traditional (or very specific) category. I’ll still be providing a list of five star books, but they won’t all focus on literary fiction.
In no particular order, because a five star rating is a five star rating. Recently:
Best Space Opera: Fortune’s Pawn by Rachel Bach. Devi Morris is a space mercenary with a mission to advance as quickly as possible, even if that means dangerous jobs. She gets more than she bargained for when she signs on with a mysterious ship.
Best Jane Eyre Retelling: Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye. Imagine Jane Eyre as an assassin… Intriguing, no? This clever page turner with pull in any Jane Eyre fan (I’m not willing to guarantee it, but almost!).
Best Historical Fiction: Rush Oh! by Shirley Barrett. I haven’t had a chance to review this one yet, as I just finished it tonight, but it’s whaling fiction set off the coast of Australia. See Kate’s or Carolyn’s review for confirmation that it’s fabulous.
Best Grit Lit: Sweetgirl by Travis Mulhauser. Sixteen year old Percy James is off to find her addict mother, again, instead she finds a baby in danger of freezing to death in a blizzard. Having no other option, she kidnaps and sets out to get her to safety. Her plans go awry almost instantly.
Best Novel Featuring Bigfoot: The Sasquatch Hunter’s Almanac by Sharma Shields. Although this novel does have a few issues, it gets five stars for the sheer weirdness of the story line.
Five books. Five stars. I found the combination fitting. If any of these categories sound good to you, you may want to give the listed book a chance. They come highly recommended from a trusted source (which is me, you do trust me, right?!).

Yay for Rachel Bach’s books! 🙂 I read your review of Jane Steele recently and I’m definitely curious to check that out at some point. Same with Rush Oh!; Kate’s review had me adding it to my wishlist.

I’m planning to read Jane Steele for sure, and Rush Oh! is pretty sure to draw me in too. I didn’t do this meme this week but some of my top reads so far this year are Being Mortal, Just Mercy, Nelly Dean, The Lie Tree, and Green Dolphin Street.

I was so not excited about Jane Steele b/c it’s a Jane Eyre retelling (not a fan of retellings in general), but all the buzz I’ve been hearing really makes me want to try it!

Wonderful to see Rush Oh! on a list since i waiting for the delivery to e able to read that book so seeing it here makes me really want to pick it up as soon as it arrives 🙂

I’ve just finished two books that I would rate 4.5 star or 5 star and I may have inadvertently discovered a genre that almost always works for me- fiction about art! The first book was The Last Painting of Sara de Vos and it was gorgeous. The second was Tuesday Nights in 1980. I finished it this morning and I’m still book drunk on it.

I’m very selective with my 5 stars, so the last fiction that I gave it to is still Fortune’s Pawn (and Heaven’s Queen).
